This coming January will see one of the distance running calendar's most popular events heading for the Moroccan city of Marrakech - with runners from all over Europe heading into the city to take part.

In excess of 5,000 runners are expected to take part in the Marrakech Marathon, with the city's palm-lined streets likely to be packed with fans cheering the runners on along the gruelling 26 mile course.

Many of Europe's top runners will be heading into Marrakech for the race event, prompting online hotel booker to advise early booking to get the maximum choice of hotel Marrakech city centre has available. The hotels close to the race start and finish lines are expected to be particularly popular.

The Marrakech Marathon is held each year thanks to the patronage of His Majesty the King Mohammed VI. The race will take place on January 29th 2012 and this will be the 23rd hosting of the event by the Moroccan city.

Runners can look forward to exception levels of organisation with plenty of water stops throughout the course - something that is essential given Morocco's tropical climate. There are also plenty of local police and race organisation staff lining the route so that runners and spectators can always ask for help should they require it.

Lek Boonlert, marketing head of, commented, “Marrakech hosts one of the most popular marathons in the world, with its streets and climate making it a fantastic destination. With so many thousands of runners and spectators heading into the city in January we recommend advance booking of hotel rooms in downtown Marrakech to be sure of a good deal."
